When an assignment item has inaccessible content and no accessible alternative is available, Edfinity can automatically give designated students full credit for that item. This article explains how inaccessible content is detected, how to review and override that detection, and how to manage automatic credit on your assignments.
How inaccessible content is detected
Edfinity automatically detects problems that have inaccessible content. A problem is flagged as inaccessible when it contains any of the following:
- Images without alt text (or with placeholder alt text)
- Video, iframe, or embedded media
- GeoGebra applets without an accessible description
- Inherently visual interaction types such as matching, hotspot, select-point, label-image, or drag-and-drop parts
How automatic credit for inaccessible content works
When a student who needs accessible content opens a problem that has inaccessible content and no accessible alternative parts, they automatically receive full credit.
Automatic credit is awarded when all of the following are true:
- The student has Enable accessible content support enabled in their student settings.
- The assignment has Automatic credit for inaccessible items enabled in its scoring settings (defaults to enabled).
- The problem is detected or marked as inaccessible.
- No accessible alternative parts cover the inaccessible parts.
Reviewing accessible content within a problem
To review whether a problem has accessible content within a problem:
- Go to the problem and edit it.
- On the Details tab, find the Accessible content dropdown. It shows one of three states:
- Auto-detect — the system determines whether the problem has inaccessible content. The current detected value (Accessible or Inaccessible) is shown in parentheses.
- Accessible (overridden) — treats as accessible, regardless of its auto-detection.
- Inaccessible (overridden) — treated as inaccessible, regardless of auto-detection.
Managing automatic credit within an assignment
Automatic credit for inaccessible items is enabled by default on every assignment. To change this setting:
- Go to the assignment.
- Select the Scoring tab.
- Find the Automatic credit for inaccessible items checkbox. When enabled, students who need accessible content will automatically receive full credit for inaccessible items if accessible alternatives are not available. Uncheck it to disable automatic credit for this assignment.
