Assignment controls determine how problems are presented to a student and how the student interacts with those problems. There are a large number of controls which give you fine-grained customization over the student experience.

View completed work before released | Whether a student can view their work after an assignment is submitted but before results are released. You may want to enable this for homework, and disable for tests. |
Use equation editor | Enables a graphical equation editor for inputting equation-based answers. If the editor does not produce the desired student answers, turn it off. |

Randomize questions | Whether to randomize variables in each student's problems, if applicable |
Shuffle choices | Whether to randomize the order of the choices in each student's multiple choice problems |

Feedback | |
Hints | Whether a student receives hints after a specified number of submissions of a problem. |
Warnings | Whether a student receives a warning after a specified number of submissions if an invalid answer is typed. For example, if the student types 'a' as a variable when it should be 'x', the student will receive a warning that 'a' is not a valid variable for that problem. |
Score | Whether a student will see the score for each problem after the problem is submitted. |
Marks (correctness) | Whether a student will see the correctness of their answers after a problem is submitted. |
Previous attempts | Whether a student will see previous attempts for each problem. |
Answers | Whether answers to the problems will be shown after the assignment is released by the educator. For more information, see Managing assignments in a course. |
Solutions | Whether detailed solutions to problems (when available) will be shown after the assignment is released by the educator. |

Allow students to use OfficeHours for homework | OfficeHours is a virtual assistant that improves student learning and engagement on homework, including practice problems and just-in-time solution guides. Learn more. |
Allow practice problems | Allow student to practice on random variations of a problem when applicable |
Show practice button after n attempts | The number of attempts required by the student before the practice button is shown. Defaults to 0. |
During practice, make solutions available | Determines how solutions are made available. Options: Immediately; After n attempts; After answered correctly. |
Restrictions | |
Time limit (seconds) | Amount of time a student has to complete an assignment. Once the assignment is opened, the timer starts and when the time is up, the assignment is closed and the student can no longer answer problems. |
Lock down student submission | When a submission is locked, students will not be able to access other assignments within this course until they finish the submission. See Restricting (locking down) student activity during an assignment |
Require activation code | Whether an access code is required for students to start the assignment. For more information, see Password-protecting an assignment. |
