Scoring settings affect how assignment student work is scored. You can adjust numeric tolerance, partial credit, grade curve, and several other settings, detailed below.
Whenever a student works on an assignment, the current scoring settings are used to score the assignment. For this reason, it is recommended that you do not change these settings once students have started work. If you do need to modify the settings, be sure to rescore the assignment so that the work of all students is scored consistently.
To configure scoring settings for an assignment:
- Go to the assignment and select the Settings > Scoring tab.
- Modify the settings as desired.
- If students have already done work, rescore that work.
There are a number of scoring settings available.
Scoring method | How to score the assignment when there are multiple submissions (best submission, last submission, or submission average). |
Numeric tolerance | Determines whether numeric student answers within the given tolerance are considered correct. |
Grading curve | Apply a curve (percentage and/or fixed number of points) to the score after a student completes their work. |
Partial credit | Whether to give partial credit for partially correct multi-part items. |
Participation credit | Whether to give credit for any item parts that have been answered, irrespective of correctness. Honors the partial credit setting. Useful in a flipped classroom setting. |
Cap score at 100% | Whether to cap the maximum score at 100% after bonus credit and/or curve are applied. |
Correct response (points) | By default, problems have a point value equal to their number of parts. You can override the default point value here. For example, to give 1 point per problem, set this value to 1. |
Configuring point defaults
Note: The settings below are advanced settings and do not typically need to be changed. Partial credit must be disabled for these settings to have any effect.
Point defaults can be used to create atypical scoring rules. For example, if you want to configure an assignment so that a student starts with the maximum number of points and is then penalized for incorrect and skipped answers, you can accomplish this as follows:
- Specify a negative skipped response value, e.g., -1.
- Specify a negative incorrect response value, e.g., -2.
- Specify a positive starting value, e.g. 2 * number of problems.
- Specify a correct response value of 0.
The following point defaults settings are available:
Incorrect response (points) | The number of points awarded for an incorrect response (defaults to 0). |
Skipped response (points) | The number of points awarded for a skipped response (defaults to 0). |
Starting score (points) | The number of points awarded for a starting score (defaults to 0). |
