Edfinity Step-by-Step is transformative AI-powered technology that allows students to easily "show their work" for a problem as a series of logical steps, and automatically scores student submissions contextually based on the steps shown along with explanatory comments.
Research clearly shows that the steps taken to solve a problem reveal a student’s thinking and grasp of mathematical concepts and alert educators immediately to misconceptions. “Show your work” has been a powerful paradigm in math teaching as it provides educators visibility into a student’s thought process.
How it works
- Step-by-Step provides students with an enhanced text box to write out intermediate steps in a solution to a problem. This is easily done by combining both regular text and mathematical expressions using an intuitive formula editor (no LaTeX required!).
- Edfinity's AI models analyze student submissions and provide a quality rating (for example, 0%, 50%, or 100%), along with a brief explanation for the rating. Instructors decide whether or not to allow (or require) steps in addition to the correct answer, and the weight it carries toward the rating. They may also override the rating at their discretion.
- Additionally, educators may give students the option to "check their work" in between attempts, allowing feedback on intermediate steps without wasting an attempt.
Key benefits
Learning outcomes. Helping students think through intermediate steps builds confidence, fosters deeper learning, and improves learning outcomes.
Academic Integrity. Requiring a student to articulate intermediate steps leading to the final answer increases the academic integrity of homework submissions and deters cheating.
Educator productivity. The Automation of personalized and contextualized grading dramatically improves educator productivity freeing up time for other crucial tasks.
Example: Customized scoring for 3 students working on the same problem
Let's take a look at how Step-By-Step rates the submissions of three different students for the same problem. Here's the problem:
Student A's work
Step-by-Step gives Student A's work a rating of 0% with the following feedback.
Student B's work
Student B's work fares better. Step-by-Step gives their work a rating of 50% with the following feedback.
Student C's work
Finally, Student C's work rates best of all. Step-by-Step gives their work a rating of 100% with the following feedback:
