Using Edfinity's free response auto-grader, you can now reliably auto-grade free response problems using a rubric. To enable auto-grading using a rubric for a problem part:
- Create and publish a rubric
- Go to the problem, and edit it.
- Select an eligible part for which you want to add rubric-based grading to (essay, show your work, or file upload).
- Under the How should this part be graded? section, select Open Rubric Lab. This will open the Rubric Lab.
- Use the Rubric lab to create a consistent and accurate rubric.
- Publish the rubric when you are done.
- Return to the problem part editor. In the How should this part be graded? section, you should see the published rubric.
- Select Automatically by AI the grading option.
- Test the rubric in the problem preview.
- Select the Preview tab.
- Enter a student answer for the question, and select Submit Answer. Edfinity will auto-grade the problem using the associated rubric and provide a score based on selection levels within the rubric's criteria.
- When you are ready, publish the assignment to make it available to your students.
Reviewing auto-graded student responses
To review an auto-graded student response:
- Go to the student's assignment, and navigate to the problem.
- In the answer table, locate the row including details for the auto-graded part. You will see the overall points awarded as well as the points awarded for each rubric criteria level. Note: Students never see the rubric criteria or grading notes. While answering questions, they are only shown an overall score. When the assignment is released, students will also see auto-generated feedback explaining why they received the score.
- If needed, you can manually override the score provided by the auto-grader. Select adjust and then select the appropriate levels for each rubric criteria.
- If rubric adjustments are needed, you can also capture a student response as a sample answer (see below).
Using student responses as sample answers during rubric generation
After students start to work on an assignment, you can capture student responses as sample answers to aid in rubric tuning within the Rubric Lab. This is particularly useful when the auto-grader incorrectly grades a student attempt, or student work highlights a gap in rubric coverage.
To capture student responses as a sample answer:
- Go to the student's assignment, and navigate to the problem.
- In the answer table, locate the row including details for the auto-graded part.
- Select Capture as sample answer to save an anonymous copy of the response as a rubric sample answer.
- Optionally select Open Rubric Lab to open the Rubric Lab and iteratively edit the rubric to accommodate the new sample before re-publishing the rubric.
Re-scoring student work after making changes to a rubric
Note: By default, when a rubric in use within an assignment is re-published with changes, previously auto-graded student responses are NOT automatically regraded. To re-score existing student work, you will need to explicitly rescore the student work.
